🦴 Tales from Scotland: Cooper Amongst the Bluebells

If there’s ever been a dog who channels the spirit of Scrappy Doo, it’s Cooper.
A Patterdale × Lakeland Terrier mix with a permanently “let me at ’em” attitude, Cooper was all sass, charm, and zoom in a woodland near Angus, Scotland, bursting with seasonal bluebells. We owe the location entirely to Scottish pet photographer Craig Cantwell, whose deep knowledge of dog-friendly landscapes helped make this shoot possible. His model call for terriers led us to this unforgettable evening session—and this unforgettable little dog.
And while we’ve photographed all kinds of pups in wild places, this one was a little extra special. Not just because of Cooper’s personality (which we’ll get to), but because of the care we all took to protect the fragile environment around us.
Bluebells in Bloom
In Scotland, native bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) are legally protected. They bloom in spring and early summer, usually peaking between late April and early June, carpeting the woodland floor with a dreamy haze of violet-blue. They’re delicate, easily trampled, and vital to local biodiversity.
That’s why we worked closely with Cooper’s humans to follow well-worn paths, natural animal tracks, and bare patches of forest floor during our session. The goal? Stunning images with zero footprint left behind.
A Terrier Tornado
Now back to Cooper.
At six years old, this compact dynamo still gets mistaken for a puppy thanks to his never-ending energy and that mischievous sparkle in his eye. His mom Rachael described him as having no off button—and she wasn’t kidding. From the moment we arrived, Cooper was alert, expressive, and ready to work every camera angle. Even while standing still, he vibrated with the kind of buzz you only get from terriers on a mission.
Rachael lovingly calls it “gargoyling”—his habit of standing beside her at attention, head bowed, waiting for something (anything!) to pounce on. He also refuses to settle if there’s so much as a fly in the house. That legendary prey drive? Still fully operational.
But despite all that intensity, Cooper’s also affectionate, loyal, and funny. He’s the kind of dog who doesn’t just live in your home—he keeps it interesting.
Purpose-Built Pup
The Patterdale × Lakeland mix isn’t one you see every day, but it makes a lot of sense for working-dog types. Both breeds were originally developed for hunting and navigating tough terrain—Patterdales in the Lake District, and Lakelands bred to pursue foxes over rocky fells.
Together, they create a smart, high-stamina, slightly wild-at-heart companion with a deep devotion to their person. Cooper may have been the “cutest but craziest” of his litter, but he turned out to be exactly the right match.

Because every dog deserves their own legend.
And we’re here to tell it—one ear flick, one paw pop, one unforgettable portrait at a time.
