A Mini Shepherd with Major Charm
Meet Quiz, a Miniature American Shepherd puppy with a personality as colorful as his merle coat and a brain that’s clearly firing on all cylinders. Just a few months old during our session at Anagach Woods, Quiz was not only adorable—he was also remarkably well-trained. From solid sit-stays to perfectly poised poses, this little guy made our job way too easy (and way too fun).
What Is a Miniature American Shepherd, Anyway?
Though often mistaken for a mini Aussie, the Miniature American Shepherd is its own breed—born from smaller Australian Shepherds and developed in the United States in the late 1960s. These dogs pack all the smarts, herding instinct, and drive of their full-sized cousins into a smaller frame, making them ideal companions for those who want an active, intelligent dog with a little less heft.
Mini Americans are known for their loyalty, agility, and trainability—and Quiz nailed all three in one short walk. Bonus points for being ridiculously photogenic and rocking two different-colored eyes.
A Bit About Anagach Woods
Located on the edge of Grantown-on-Spey in the Scottish Highlands, Anagach Woods offers a magical mix of Scots pine, mossy trails, and soft golden light that filters in just right—especially for photographing vibrant pups like Quiz.
These ancient woods were originally planted in the 1760s and are now protected as a community-owned forest. The soft underfoot, filtered sunbeams, and fairytale-like setting made it the perfect stage for Quiz’s debut in our Tales from Scotland series.
We wandered trails and mossy logs, letting his curiosity lead the way. The forest may be ancient, but with Quiz in front of the camera, everything felt brand new.
Because every dog deserves their own legend.
And we’re here to tell it—one ear flick, one paw pop, one unforgettable portrait at a time.
