REWRITTEN: Stories of Second Chances

 

Seventeen Jacksonville Humane Society alumni. Seventeen very different lives. One exhibition celebrating everything that came after someone said yes.

DULCE

Rescue stories are often told through beginnings.

The shelter. The foster home. The moment someone stopped in front of a kennel, looked into a pair of eyes and decided to take a chance.

But for the dogs and cats in REWRITTEN: Stories of Second Chances, adoption wasn't the ending.

It was where the most important part of the story began.

Created by The PAWtographers in collaboration with Jacksonville Humane Society, REWRITTEN brings together 17 JHS alumni whose lives unfolded in very different ways after they went home.

Not where they started.
Who they became.

The Story After the Shelter

A second chance can become almost anything.

It can become years of ordinary mornings and favorite walking routes. It can become a dog who is known throughout a neighborhood, a kitten who grows into a foster mentor, or an animal whose presence changes a family in ways no one could have predicted.

Some of the animals in REWRITTEN are still living those stories today. Others are remembered through the people whose lives they changed.

What connects them isn't what happened before adoption. It is everything they were given the chance to become afterward.

PACER

Seventeen Lives, Seventeen Stories

There is Benny, whose devastating injury led to surgery at Jacksonville Humane Society and a life lived at full speed on three legs.

Teddy arrived in foster care as a kitten and later became the cat who helped generations of foster kittens learn how to play, cuddle and trust.

Pacer became a beloved shop dog and a familiar face in his community. Chance carried an enormous capacity for joy into the life that came after his difficult beginning.

And those are only a few.

Each portrait in the exhibition is paired with a piece of that animal's story, inviting visitors to look beyond the photograph and discover the life behind it.

ELLA

Portraits Created Around the Animal

REWRITTEN was never intended to look like a traditional collection of shelter photographs.

These animals had already gone home. They already belonged to someone. They had personalities, routines, relationships and histories all their own.

So each piece was approached individually.

Some portraits were created in the studio. Others were photographed outdoors, on the beach, among flowers or against the lights and color of the city. The finished artwork was designed around the personality and story of the animal rather than forcing every subject into the same visual treatment.

PIPER

When the Portrait Becomes a Memory

Piper's portrait is one of those painted works.

He was photographed through the memories and photographs his family already had, and his finished piece became especially meaningful when he passed away shortly before the exhibition opened.

Faron and Sparky appear together in the second painting for a considerably less solemn reason: the two cats had absolutely no interest in coming to the studio.

Their opinion was respected.

Instead, their artwork was created in a way that allowed their story to remain part of REWRITTEN without asking them to become something they weren't.
