WHEN LOVE FOUND ITS WAY BACK

Just days after unexpectedly losing her beloved dog, Noelle, Joan Walker wasn't looking to adopt another companion.

She had gone to Jacksonville Humane Society to help her daughter find the right dog for her young family.

While her daughter was meeting a dog outside, Joan noticed a tiny fawn-colored dog with black-tipped ears and nose curled tightly in a volunteer's lap. Known then as Luna Marie, the frightened little Boston Terrier-Poodle mix was too afraid to put even a single paw on the ground.

Joan asked if she could simply sit beside her.

As she gently stroked the little dog's soft coat, she couldn't help but notice her expressive eyes. There was something special about her, but grief still filled the place where Noelle had been. Joan wasn't convinced she was ready to love another dog.

Later that afternoon, Luna Marie was resting quietly in her kennel, waiting for a large adoption event the following day.

Their eyes met one more time.

In that moment, Joan realized the little dog had already made the decision.

She brought her home, gave her the name Dulce, the Spanish word for "sweet," and began a journey neither of them expected.

For the first three days, Dulce stayed curled tightly against Joan's chest. As long as they were touching, she felt safe. Little by little, the frightened dog who had been too afraid to stand on the ground found the confidence to explore, play, and trust.

Today, Dulce is equal parts sweet and spicy. She's athletic, endlessly entertaining, fiercely loyal, and completely devoted to her family. Her favorite place is still close to Joan, but now she's just as likely to be racing through the yard, making everyone laugh with her terrier x poodle antics. The family even jokes that her full name should be Dulce Picante, because beneath all that sweetness is just the right amount of spice.

Dulce didn't replace the dog who came before her.

She simply reminded Joan that even a grieving heart can find room to love again.
