Dennis Gerard thought he was giving two young rescue dogs a second chance when he adopted Piper and his brother, Radar, from Jacksonville Humane Society. He never imagined they would go on to change his life forever.

Piper and Radar quickly became much more than pets. They became family, faithful companions who shared nearly two decades of life's adventures. After losing Radar to cancer at age 14, Piper remained by Dennis's side, offering the steady companionship that had always defined him.

As the years passed, Piper faced challenge after challenge. He gradually lost his sight and hearing. Arthritis slowed his steps. Canine cognitive dysfunction changed the way he experienced the world. Heart disease and dental disease followed.

Yet Piper never gave up.

Instead, he adapted.

He approached each new obstacle with determination, curiosity, and an unmistakable joy for life, reminding everyone around him that growing older is a privilege, not something to fear.

Dennis began sharing Piper's journey through photos and videos, never expecting how many lives this little rescue dog would touch. What started as a way to celebrate one beloved companion grew into a community of hundreds of thousands of people. Piper's story was featured by national media outlets, and his videos were viewed millions of times around the world.

But Piper's greatest accomplishment wasn't his popularity.

It was changing the way people saw senior dogs.

Through every milestone, setback, and triumph, he showed that older and special-needs pets still have adventures to enjoy, love to give, and lives worth celebrating. He inspired families to embrace every stage of life with their companions and encouraged others to consider opening their hearts to senior rescue dogs.

When Piper crossed the Rainbow Bridge in May 2026 at the remarkable age of 19½, his influence did not end.

Inspired by Piper's extraordinary life, Dennis founded Frosted Dog to continue sharing the message Piper had lived every day: that every senior dog deserves the chance to be loved, cherished, and celebrated.
