THE PROMISE WE COULDN'T KEEP

"Can we keep her?"

After losing their beloved senior cat, Annabella, to kidney disease, Gloria and her husband made a promise. Having shared their home with four cats during their marriage, they agreed they would not add or replace another feline companion.

It wasn't an easy promise to keep.

Years later, while picking up prescription food for their diabetic cat at Deerwood Animal Clinic, a veterinary technician placed a tiny tortoiseshell kitten in Gloria's hands and said, "She needs a home."

Knowing the agreement they had made, Gloria looked at her husband anyway.

"Can we keep her?"

His smile was all the answer she needed.

The kitten was named Faron, inspired by the unusual name of a country singer he admired and thought paired beautifully with their family name. Faron Fabian became part of the family that day.

As a kitten, Faron delighted friends with an acrobatic "trapeze" routine on a ladder-back dining chair, climbing to the top before flipping from rung to rung before doing it all over again. She loved having an audience.

Today, Faron is more than a cherished companion. She is a living reminder of a promise made with love, a promise joyfully broken, and the life Gloria and her husband built together.

SPARKY

THE FOSTER WHO STAYED FOREVER

On a cold January evening, a good Samaritan found a frightened kitten searching for food behind a Panera restaurant and brought him to Jacksonville Humane Society. During his intake exam, the tiny newcomer made his feelings known, earning the name Sparky because, as Gloria recalls, "the sparks were flying."

When Sparky entered Gloria's foster care, he was unsure of the unfamiliar world around him. Life indoors, with warmth, regular meals and caring hands, was very different from the life he had known.

Little by little, his fear began to fade.

With patience, love and the companionship of two older kittens, Sparky slowly emerged from hiding. He learned to play, to trust and to enjoy the comfort of a home.

As he grew more confident, Gloria realized something unexpected. After all they had shared together, it no longer felt right to place him on the adoption floor.

Gradually, they both came to understand the same thing.

Sparky had already found his forever home.

Today, the once-frightened kitten is the regal ruler of the household. From his favorite spot on the sofa, he happily kneads blankets, offers contented purrs and reminds everyone that sometimes the greatest transformations happen one quiet day at a time.
