Let's Talk Event Etiquette

Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Public Places and Dog-Friendly Events

We attend a lot of events year-round, as both vendors (have you been to our Pet Portraits for Charity booth?) and as dog owners.... And we have pretty much seen it all.

Mostly, dog owners are great and are really attentive to their dogs' abilities -- both physically and mentally -- when in a busy, crowded space with lots of distractions. And, we also see pawrents who are so well meaning but sometimes just aren't aware of what is best for their pups.

Whether you're heading to a local park, attending a dog-friendly festival, or simply enjoying a day out, ensuring the safety and comfort of your dog, as well as practicing good etiquette, is crucial. Here are some friendly and practical tips to make your outings enjoyable for both you and your dog.

1. Know Your Dog’s Limits

Every dog is different, and it’s important to understand your dog's temperament and physical limits. Some dogs thrive in social settings, while others may feel anxious or overwhelmed. Before heading to a busy event, consider:

  • Behavior: If your dog is shy or reactive around strangers or other dogs, a crowded event might not be the best environment. Big, busy, noisy events can be taxing on even the most friendly, and outgoing dogs.
  • Be Your Dog's Advocate: If your dog needs space, make sure your dog has space from other dogs and people. It's okay to tell people no, they cannot pet your dog.
  • Health: Ensure your dog is in good health, up to date on vaccinations, and protected against fleas and ticks.

2. Basic Training and Socialization

A well-trained dog is not only easier to manage in public but also safer for everyone around. Make sure your dog:

  • Responds to Basic Commands: Commands like sit, stay, come, and leave it can be very useful in managing your dog's behavior in public.
  • Is Socialized: Gradually expose your dog to different environments, people, and other dogs to build their confidence and social skills.
  • Need a trainer? Check out All Fur Pets and super trainer, Chrissy Dullano.

3. Leashes, Leashes, Leashes!

No retractable leashes. No, no, no. Did we say no? Yes, that is a NO. And especially no when in a public event. Use a four to six-foot leash and keep your pup close to you at all times.

4. Pack a Doggie Day Bag

Prepare a bag with essentials to keep your dog comfortable and happy during your outing. Items to include:

  • Water and Bowl: Hydration is key, especially on hot days, which is all summer in Florida and fall and.... Bring plenty of water and a portable bowl.
  • Treats: Reward good behavior with treats, but avoid overfeeding.
  • Poop Bags: Always clean up after your dog to keep public spaces pleasant for everyone.
  • Toys: Bring a favorite toy to keep your dog entertained.
  • First Aid Kit: A basic first aid kit for dogs can be handy for minor injuries or emergencies.

5. Practice Good Etiquette

Good manners go a long way in making sure that you and your dog are welcome in public places and at events. Keep these etiquette tips in mind:

  • Respect Personal Space: Not everyone is comfortable around dogs. Keep your dog close to you and avoid letting them approach strangers or other dogs without permission.
  • Control Barking: Excessive barking can be disruptive. Train your dog to minimize barking in public settings. If your dog is constantly barking at events, they aren't comfortable. Consider their needs and either work with them (and a trainer) to build confidence and limit barking or let them stay at home.
  • Mind the Heat: Avoid hot pavement that can burn your dog’s paws. Plan activities during cooler parts of the day and provide shade when needed.

6. Be Attentive and Responsive

Stay alert to your dog’s needs and reactions. Watch for signs of stress or discomfort, such as escessive panting, yawning, shaking, whining, or trying to hide. If your dog seems anxious or overwhelmed, it might be time to leave.

7. Enjoy the Moment

Bringing your dog to public places and events can be a wonderful bonding experience. Enjoy the opportunity to explore new environments, meet other dog lovers, and create lasting memories with your furry friend.

Happy adventuring!
