Helping Your Dog Through Summer Storms and Fireworks 🎆⛈️
This summer feels a little different for us. For the first time in over 20 years, our pack doesn’t have a dog who’s afraid of fireworks or thunderstorms. It’s a first — and while we're grateful, we’ll never forget the years spent comforting our dogs through every rumble of thunder and crack of fireworks.
We know firsthand how stressful this season can be for many dogs (and their humans), and that’s why we put together this quick guide — to help you and your pup have a calmer, safer summer.
1. Understand Why Loud Noises Are So Scary
A 2018 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that nearly half of dogs exhibit signs of fear when exposed to loud noises, such as fireworks and thunderstorms. And for good reason! Dogs hear at frequencies between 40–60,000 Hz — much higher than humans. so, what sounds "loud" to us can feel painfully intense to them.
2. Create a Safe Space Indoors
Before the booms start, set up a cozy, quiet place where your dog can retreat:
- Use a crate (if your dog finds it comforting) or a small room away from windows
- Add blankets, a favorite toy, and an item that smells like you
- Play white noise, soft music, or use calming playlists made for dogs

3. Calm Through Comfort (Not Coddling)
Your instinct may be to "over-comfort," but experts recommend staying calm and neutral.
If you act anxious, your dog may feed off your energy.
✅ Offer gentle petting if they seek it out
✅ Speak in a normal, relaxed tone
✅ Model calm behavior to help them regulate

4. Gear and Tools That Can Help
Some extra tools can make a big difference:
- ThunderShirt Calming Wrap — a pressure wrap proven to help reduce anxiety
- Adaptil Calm Diffuser — mimics calming dog pheromones to ease stress
- Zylkene Natural Calming Supplement — a vet-recommended, non-sedating calming supplement
- SimpliSolve CBD Dissolving Strips - CBD-infused strips are designed for pets
Consult Your Veterinarian - Always consult your veterinarian before starting supplements, especially if your dog has existing health conditions. For dogs with severe noise phobias, it's essential to consult your veterinarian. They may recommend prescription medications or other interventions tailored to your dog's specific needs.
5. Plan Ahead for July 4th (and Summer Storms)
Preparation is everything:
- Walk early: Make sure your dog is exercised and toileted well before storms or fireworks are expected.
- Secure gates and doors: More pets go missing on July 4th than any other day.
- Microchip & tag check: Ensure ID tags are updated and your dog is microchipped — with current contact information.
Small Steps, Big Comfort
Helping your dog through storm season and fireworks isn’t about eliminating fear overnight. It’s about creating a safe, calm environment, preparing in advance, and being a steady, loving presence.
You’ve got this — and your dog’s trust means everything. 🐶💖
