📝 Hurricane Prep with Pets

A Southeastern Survival Guide

From Florida through Virginia, hurricane season is a way of life. We all joke about Publix hurricane cakes (Publix are you listening? PLEASE bring these back!), stock up on White Claw as storm “supplies,” and measure severity by the Waffle House Index—but behind the humor is serious prep that keeps both people and pets safe.

Whether you evacuate or ride it out, being prepared can make all the difference. Here’s how to keep tails wagging, no matter what the forecast holds.

👩‍👩‍👧 Prep for People (Because Pets Rely on You)

  • Stay weather-aware: Keep an eye on NOAA, local alerts, and reliable weather apps. Hurricanes shift quickly.
  • Know your flood zone: Remember the rule: Hide from wind, run from water.
  • Gas up early: Fill cars, generators, and propane tanks before the rush.
  • Power up: Charge battery packs, check flashlights, and stock extra batteries.
  • Water + food: Plan for at least 7–10 days for each person (and pet). Fill bathtubs for washing and flushing.
  • Supplies: Keep non-perishable food, medications, and a first-aid kit on hand.
  • Generator safety: Learn how to use it before the storm. Never run indoors.
  • Cash & comfort: ATMs and card readers may go down. Be sure to have a ready supply of cash to use post hurricane.

Freezer hack: Freeze a cup of water and place a quarter on top. If the quarter sinks after a power outage, your freezer thawed and refroze--and the food may not be safe.

🐾 Prep for Pets

  • Pet go-bag: Pack 7–10 days of food, water, meds, leash, harness, toys, and a favorite blanket.
  • Food: If your dog normally eats refrigerated, raw, or frozen meals, keep shelf-stable dry or canned food as a backup.
  • ID & microchip: Make sure collars have current tags and microchip info is updated.
  • Evacuation ready: Have a crate or carrier and know where the nearest pet-friendly shelters or hotels are located.
  • Safe space inside: Designate a window-free room, and use white noise or calming music to ease storm anxiety.
  • After the storm: Be cautious on walks—debris, standing water, and downed lines can all be dangerous.

🛣️ If You Evacuate

  • Leave early—traffic jams are stressful for both people and pets.
  • Never leave pets behind.
  • Bring printed and digital vet records, in case you need boarding or hotel stays.

🏠 If You Stay

  • Stock 7–10 days of food, water, and meds for everyone in the house.
  • Keep gas tanks and cash ready.
  • Put up your storm shutters before the tropical storm force winds arrive.
  • Be prepared for indoor potty breaks with puppy pads or litter if it’s unsafe to go outside.
  • Consider a satellite phone for emergency communication. Newer iPhones also offer Emergency SOS via satellite—go into Settings > Emergency SOS > Emergency SOS via Satellite to make sure you know how it works before you need it.
  • Stay inside until officials say it’s clear.

💬 Final Thoughts

Hurricane season is part of life in the Southeast—but with the right prep, you and your pup can weather the storm safely. And when the skies clear, we’ll be ready to create beautiful portraits in calmer, brighter days.
