Kelly Cooney wasn't planning to adopt a dog that day.

He had organized a volunteer event at Jacksonville Humane Society, where employees from his company spent the day walking shelter dogs. Aspen happened to be Kelly's first walking partner that morning.

Later that day, they were matched together again.

Something about Aspen stayed with him.

Kelly remembers her gentle spirit, her loving personality, and the amazing energy she carried with her. By the end of the day, he knew he couldn't leave without her. That evening, Aspen went home to meet her rescued cat brother, Dax, and found the forever family she had been waiting for.

At nine years old and heartworm positive, Aspen could easily have been overlooked. Instead, someone looked beyond her age and diagnosis and saw the sweet, affectionate dog she had always been.

Today, Aspen has embraced life with enthusiasm. She loves trips to the beach, and one of Kelly's greatest joys has been watching her slowly come to life. Seeing Aspen trot proudly alongside Dax as he rides in his stroller, her tail held high, reminds him that they are all enjoying the journey together.

Aspen's story isn't defined by her age or the challenges she faced before arriving at Jacksonville Humane Society.

It's defined by the moment someone saw her for who she truly was.
