Cool Treats for Hot Pups: Three Healthy Homemade Dog Treats for Summer

As the summer sun blazes down in the summer, keeping your doggo cool and hydrated is essential. What better way to do that than with some delicious and healthy homemade dog treats? Here are three simple recipes that will not only refresh your dog but also provide them with some nutritious goodness.

1. Frozen Yogurt & Fruit Puree Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup blueberries or strawberries (fresh or frozen), also good are carrots made into a puree (see below) or pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup water (if creating a puree; not necessary if it's already a puree, such as the pumpkin)

Instructions:

  1. Blend the berries with water until smooth to create a fruit puree.
  2. Mix the fruit puree with the yogurt.
  3. Pour the mixture into silicone molds or ice cube trays.
  4. Freeze for at least 3 hours or until solid.
  5. Store the treats in an airtight container in the freezer.

Benefits: Yogurt provides probiotics for a healthy gut, and berries are loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins.

2. Frozen Peanut Butter & Banana Bites

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt (optional - and again, NO artifical sweetners!)

Instructions:

  1. Mash the ripe banana in a bowl.
  2. Mix in the peanut butter and yogurt until well combined.
  3. Spoon the mixture into silicone molds or ice cube trays.
  4. Freeze for at least 3 hours or until solid.
  5. Pop out the treats and store them in an airtight container in the freezer.

Benefits: Bananas are rich in potassium and fiber, while peanut butter provides protein and healthy fats. Yogurt adds probiotics for digestive health.

3. Watermelon Pup Pops

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups seedless watermelon
  • 1/4 cup coconut water

Instructions:

  1. Cut the watermelon into chunks, removing any seeds.
  2. Blend the watermelon and coconut water until smooth.
  3. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds.
  4. Freeze for a few hours until solid.
  5. Serve these refreshing popsicles to your pup on a hot day.

Benefits: Watermelon is hydrating and packed with vitamins A, B6, and C. Coconut water is a natural source of electrolytes.

Final Tips:

  • Always ensure the ingredients you use are safe for dogs. Avoid any artificial sweeteners, especially xylitol, as they are toxic to dogs.
  • Introduce new treats gradually and monitor your dog for any adverse reactions.
  • Keep the treat portions appropriate to maintain a balanced diet.

These homemade dog treats are not only easy to make but also provide a fun and tasty way to keep your furry friend cool during hot summer days. Enjoy making these recipes, and watch your dog’s tail wag with joy!
