Education for Photographers
Learn the craft. Understand the dog. Create with intention.
Photographing dogs is about far more than camera settings and lighting. It’s about learning to read the dog in front of you, work with what they give you, and create intentionally—even when nothing goes exactly as planned.
Through hands-on workshops, multi-day photography programs, and private mentoring, Joan Walker offers dog photography education grounded in the techniques, problem-solving skills, and creative approach developed through years of photographing dogs of every size, personality, and ability.

Four-Day Immersive Workshop
Go beyond simply photographing dogs—and learn how to create portraits with intention.
UNLEASHED is four immersive days of hands-on dog photography, working with a variety of live dog models in the studio and on location. We’ll explore lighting, posing, expression, action, and the practical techniques that help you confidently photograph dogs with different personalities, energy levels, and training abilities.
And we won’t stop at capture. We’ll take images through post-production, compositing, and creative finishing to see how a photograph becomes finished artwork.
Come ready to photograph, experiment, ask questions—and spend four days completely immersed in the art of photographing dogs.

Let’s Work on What You Need.
One-on-one education. Your questions. Your goals. Your photography.
Sometimes you don’t need another class. You need someone to sit down with you, look at your work, answer the questions that are holding you back, and help you figure out what comes next.
Private mentoring with Joan is completely customized around you. Sessions can focus on photographing dogs, lighting, posing and expression, image critique, post-production, competition images, compositing, workflow, or the business of building a stronger photography brand.
Bring your images. Bring your questions. Bring the things that aren’t working quite the way you want them to. We’ll start there.

Looking for something beyond another sit-and-watch photography program? Joan’s READY. SET. WOOF! programs are built around live animals, real shooting situations, and the problem-solving that happens when the subject has four legs and an opinion of its own.
Designed for photography guilds, associations, schools, and professional organizations, programs combine demonstration with hands-on shooting, practical animal handling, lighting and posing, and the post-production techniques that take an image from capture to finished portrait.
