Keeping Your Dog Safe During Hurricane Milton: Essential Prep Tips for Peace of Mind

Steps You Can Take Now to Keep Your Dog Safe and Calm During the Storm

As Hurricane Milton approaches, it’s important to take extra precautions for your dogs. Depending on the trajectory, this storm could be devastating, and most of our friends and dog families are currently in the cone. We are prepping here in St. Augustine (we’ve recently moved to St. John’s County—more on that soon, but right now, the storm is our top priority).

Here are some important tips to keep your dogs safe and calm:

  1. Create a Pet Emergency Kit:

    • 3-7 days of food and water
    • Medications and medical records
    • Leash, harness, and collar with ID tags
    • Recent photos of your dog in case of separation
  2. Comfort is Key:

    • Bring their favorite blanket, bed, or toy for comfort.
    • Set up a safe, secure space indoors away from windows.
    • Keep them calm with white noise or soft music to drown out the storm sounds.
  3. Plan for Evacuation:

    • Make a hotel reservation today if you might evacuate—you can always cancel it later.
    • Know which shelters in your area are pet-friendly.
    • Ensure you have a copy of your dog’s medical records, as shelters often require proof of vaccinations.
    • Write your name and phone number on your dog’s tummy or thigh with a permanent marker (or shave the area) to ensure identification if separated.
  4. During the Storm:

    • Keep your dog close and monitor for signs of anxiety.
    • Avoid taking them outside until it’s safe.

Stay safe and give your pups some extra love during this stressful time. If you need any help or have questions, feel free to reach out.
